Introduction to Tahtib

Tahtib or Tahteeb is a combination of stick fencing and various forms of traditional dancing. Its origins are reported to have begun in ancient fighting and training systems from Egypt and the Middle Eastern states from thousands of years ago.

The art is said to honour the ‘pharoahs’. Egyptians still perform this skilful art especially during festival time, big social events and even during the wedding ceremony. The royal family and army were traditionally trained in this art. When Tahtib is performed as a fighting art, there are frequently exchanges of blows and the head is one of the main targets.

More on Tahtib

The other important aspects of this art can involve symbolic dance in the form of combat performed alone or by groups. It can also be executed from high positions whilst riding a horse but with longer sticks. Elegant women may use a different form of Tahtib (Asaya) as an attractive form of entertainment, or on the other hand men may engage in some serious street fights using these techniques.

Hatab is the word for stick. The term Tahtib encompasses ‘the art of the righteousness’. This historical African martial art allows for the development and practice of high precision skills and endurance fitness.
