Taekwondo originates from South Korea, and literally means the way of the hand and foot. There are approximately 180 million practitioners of this martial art around the globe. The two main organizations, WTF and ITF contain classic forms/patterns (kata). These movements have significant applications. General Choi Hong Hi founded the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) in 1966. This organization has rules for sparring and patterns that are different to the WTF. Japanese karate has influenced the modern development of this ancient style.
Taekwondo has risen in popularity since it became an Olympic sport in the year 2000. Observers also enjoy the display of taekwondo’s power during board breaking and form competitions. The military systems of South Korea and USA incorporate Taekwondo into their training.
