More on Sumo Wrestling

The game of sumo wrestling is not bound by many rules unlike most of the other martial art techniques all over the world. The contestant who eventually manages to toss his opponent out of the ring eventually emerges as the winner of the game. The ring which is used for this game should ideally measure up to 4.55 meters across. The Sumo wrestlers, as we all know are heavy weight and bulky. These wrestlers indulge in a diet made up mainly of rice in order to achieve their huge frame. The heavier the wrestler, the higher are his chances of winning the game. This is because the heavier wrestlers have a low gravity which makes it difficult for their opponents to throw them out of the ring. An average wrestler weighs up to a few hundred pounds.

The wrestlers always enter the ring wearing thick belts on their waists which are made of silk. A long silk cloth is folded a lot of times in order to make this particular belt. It is a tradition for the participants to toss a little bit of salt in the ring before the commencement of the match. This gesture is believed to purify the ring. They also ask for God’s blessings in order to win the match. The one thing that sets sumo wrestling apart from other games is that one never sees the winner laugh and jump after he wins the match.

The wrestlers try and do everything in their right to be able to push their co-participant out of the ring so that they can be the winners. This entire exercise lasts for a brief period, sometimes just a few seconds. However, there are matches that can go up to as much as a two or even three minutes. Pulling the opponents hair, striking him with the fist and gouging his eyes are considered to be violations of the game. These restrictions see to it that there are hardly any injuries that occur inside the sumo wrestling ring. The winning strategies normally used by these wrestlers are pushing, slapping and body throws of various kinds.

One might think that the entire concept of winning a match is about the weight and physical strength of the wrestlers. On the contrary, the game of sumo wrestling is primarily based on mental warfare. These wrestlers often give each other long angry stares as to break the opponent’s concentration and get him into making a wrong move. These strategies of the wrestlers determine their ranks. The rank of a Sumo wrestler is raised every time he wins a match.
