Introduction to Shito Ryu Karate
The Shito Ryu School of karate is one of the four main styles of karate apart from Goju-Ryu, Wado-Ryu and Shotokan. There are also a number of other karate forms that are followed in different corners of the world. Almost all of these styles have accredited their origin to the Okinawa islands. The technique of Shito Ryu Karate was founded by Kenwa Mabuni (1890-1954), who was very sought after, as karate master of Okinawa. Mabuni extensively studied the two martial art styles of Naha-Te (Goju-ryu karate) and Shuri-Te in order to come up with this form of karate, which was a combination of both these styles. Today, this form of karate is widely taught and used not only in Japan, but also in all parts of the globe. Being a mix of two distinct styles of karate, it can be said that Shito Ryu Karate is a complete martial art in itself, as it combines the techniques of two contradictive styles so that the martial art form devised, as a result, is diverse and complete. It includes the linear actions and immense physical strength that is the main characteristic of Goju-ryu karate, along with the breathing techniques and the hard and soft styles of Shuri-Te Karate. The use of traditional weapons of Okinawa is also taught to the students learning this form of karate.
