This form of martial art was introduced in Russia in the 1930s. This style is a mix of martial arts techniques from China, Japan and France. This form of martial arts came to be used very extensively in the period of the World War II. This is one of the few martial art forms that have kept improvising themselves and changing with the times. More on Sambo

Sambo is mainly a self defense practice, which is based primarily on movements of different parts of the body in combination with a variety of joint locks, kicks and punches which are mastered with the intention of shielding any kind of attack and causing only as much physical damage to the enemy as necessary. In today’s times, this style is used in three main variations: the competitive sport, for self defense and as a combat system, which is made use of, by the military and the police forces. Other important techniques that help the practitioners emerge out of situation are direct hand and feet strikes, as well as choke holds. This form also constitutes of the use of a few basic weapons for additional impact.

The most aggressive and power packed version of the sambo is the combat version. This version makes use of vicious kicks, spine locks, throws and punches which require a lot of strength and can cause serious physical damage. Some of the antagonistic practitioners also resort to means like biting, even though they are outlawed techniques. The level of expertise that a student acquires with regards to this form of martial art is hugely dependent on his ability to control and guide his body movements.

The student can excel in all the possible techniques involved, provided he can create a comfortable and smooth understanding of his body movements, in addition to his mental responsiveness. Unlike most of the other martial art forms, sambo does not follow standardized forms or curriculum. The technique, strength and strategy of student vary from one another and every individual student develops his own style. As and when the students start getting better at this style, they begin to come up with their own styles of throws and devastating kicks.

While trying to learn any type of martial art, the connection between the mind, body and soul is extremely important. The sambo is no different to this ground rule, as there is a great deal of ethical responsibility that is bestowed upon both the student, as well as the teacher of this form. The students have to always remember that they should make use of the destructive techniques taught to them only in times of self defense. A true practitioner of Sambo is instructed to never cause damage to any fellow human, in the absence of a logical reason.
