Introduction to American Kenpo Karate

Kenpo KaratePlease note Kempo is the actual historic spelling in which American Kenpo Karate (AKK) derives from, however the founder of this variation of Kempo decided to spell it as Kenpo.

American Kenpo or otherwise known as Kenpo Karate is a distinct form of Kenpo martial arts created by Edmund Kealoha Parker. It is known for its fast, high frequency moves, which are designed to deluge an opponent. This must not be confused with other Kenpo styles. The main form of Kenpo which American Kenpo derives from was created in 1949 by William K. S. Chow

Kenpo Katate is widely seen as a Martial Art of self defense with many of the techniques having roots to Chinese Kung Fu as well as historic Martial Arts styles of Hawaii and Japan (Koshu-Ryu Kenpo). There are a large number of Kenpo Karate instructors directly taught by Edmund Parker who in turn have different styles of Kenpo. The style of American Kenpo was set in stone Parkers book in 1987: Infinite Insights into Kenpo Mental & Physical Applications. Any styles which teach variations of this book are not regarded as American Kenpo Karate.

More on American Kenpo Karate

American Kenpo Karate has many traces of other martial arts styles such as kung fu, karate, boxing, aikido, judo, and jiu-jitsu although of course as a whole it is very different to each of them. It is well known for its intense brutality, especially within its street self defense techniques, which is involves many street fighting aspects such as grappling, leg sweeps, throws, joint locks, punches, pressure points and punches.

This style makes use of linear and circular moves (unlike traditional styles which primarily only use linear). It teaches how to maneuver so that an opponent unknowingly puts himself into vulnerable position. It is common for students to be encouraged to alter the moves that they are taught, however the underlying principles from Ed Parkers system should never be changed and always kept in mind. the reason for allowing students to slightly alter their techniques is to allow the techniques to match their body size and agility.

This is a very popular Martial Arts style with black belts from other styles as it teaches realistic fighting methods for self defense.
