Tahtib - Practice

The Practice of
Tahtib

The traditional form of stick fighting that is practiced in Egypt is called Tahtib. It is also a traditional dance originating from the Middle East. This shares similarities with other world martial arts. For example Capoiera, which comes from Brazil has a dance system that also incorporates combat techniques. Silat is a cultural exchange of dance and fight forms that comes from the Indonesian subcontinent. Tahtib has also developed this system whereby there is an attractive entertaining art form but there is also realistic combat play.

There is a potential to have an expert knowledge in one area of Tahtib but not know much about another. There are said be five known separate areas of study in Tahtib and individuals who are expert in one field may not have enough knowledge about another area. The modern era views Tahtib as a style of skilful and choreographed dance. These can currently be viewed as big stage performances in the Middle East.

Different aspects of training include firstly a martial art that is learnt on foot. Once the basics have been mastered then it is possible to pratice whilst on horseback. Another variation is to incorporate the techniques into a solo dance routine. Groups of men can use the techniques of Tahtib to perform combat dance. Finally women may adapt the original movements to perform an entertaining feminine dance.
