Shorinji Kempo Legends

The legends of
Shorinji Kempo

So DoshinIt was in the year 1947 when one of the most influential types of martial art style was established. This martial art style was founded by Doshin So -addressed as Kaiso (=the founder.)

A feature of this martial art is the philosophy of Kongo Zen which is a fusion of Zen, original Buddhism and Kaiso's own philosophy. As with most of the martial arts developed in Japan in latter years, there is a considerable amount of Zen and Buddhism to a greater or lesser degree incorporated into their philosophy. Shorinji Kempo is very well organized and structured with the training divided into two parts.

The Gakka and Jukka syllabus. Gakka is the mental study which covers such subjects as principles that make techniques work, philosophy and establishment and history of Shorinji Kempo, to name a few of the topics. Jukka is the practical or physical study, covering Goho (hard system) and Juho (soft system) and Seiho (healing system).

The grading system and the nature of the Branch is divided into two paths. When being graded there are two gradings taking place. The philosophical and physical. The belt system indicates the martial or physical grade and a sleeve badge indicates the philosophical ranking. The philosophical ranking can not be lower than the martial ranking. Regular Kenshi (practitioners) basically need to show that they have read the material to pass their grading. However if a Kenshi is particularly interested in the philosophical aspect or if they want to become an instructor they can study in greater depth and be awarded a higher level of philosophical ranking. For the Instructors who achieve this level their training place is referred to as a "Doin" rather than a Dojo. Where an Instructor (usually the lower graded ones) focuses on the martial aspect, their training place is still referred to as a "Dojo".

The original meaning of Dojo was "A place where Buddhism is studied", however this has gone by the way as the emphasis is more on technique and this is particularly so outside Japan. So Kenshi have a choice as to which path they wish to follow. However as in most styles the religious aspect is quite subtle, you probably are not aware how much of your training is influenced by Zen and buddhisim on a daily basis So Doshin was also refered to as "Shike" as is the current head of the organization. Shike means the "leader of warrior monks".

Having a close look at the Shorinji Kempo it is observed that the objectives are to develop good people who have an equal regard for the welfare and happiness of others. As such even when someone attacks, the objective is simple and clear. In the first instance avoid getting hurt. In the second avoid hurting the attacker, often when someone is beaten they end up wanting to be your friend, something about respect being earned. Hence there are no techniques that kill or cause long term or permanent damage. Once one has developed a certain level of skill the system is very effective for self defense. (Watch the space "legends" for true stories of some escapade that may appear). Ask your self "Why would you want to kill or maim someone with the complications that would cause?" "Why not simply knock them unconscious or put them on the floor and pin them until the situation calms down?" depending on the circumstances. This is because Shorinji Kempo philosophy teaches to respect everyone and have a regard for their welfare. Shorinji Kempo training is not only to defend oneself and others, but also actively pursues to nurture a good positive human nature.

Kenshi, is what practitioners of Shorinji Kempo are called. Over the years it has been highly successful in expanding its presence in Japan and around the world. Sehio is the third physical aspect of the Shorinji Kempo syllabus. It is divided into four parts. 1/. "Massage" to relax and restore blood flow. 2/. "Shiatsu" (acupuncture with fingers -not needles)to restore energy flows. 3/. "Bone alignment" (Chiropractic) restore the skeleton to its natural alignment and relieve pressure on nipped nerves. 4/. "Revival" to restore consciousness or a paralyzed limb after being struck on a vital point or even after drowning, electric shock etc.

The extent of the massive popularity of Shoriniji Kempo can be understood by the fact that there is a whole organization that works to preserve this martial art and that organization is officially known as the "World Shorinji Kempo Organization" located at the headquarters in the small town of Tadotsu on the island of Shikoku. This organization has preserved and taught the style created by Doshin So in 1947. Factually, there are more than 1,500,000 members who have joined and learnt this form of martial art style. The branches of this organization are spread in more than 30 countries and the total number of branches are over 3,000 in Japan alone.

The popularity and fame that Shorinji Kempo has witnessed in such a short span since 1947, is all because of the dedication of its founder Doshin So and the hundreds of senior Instructors who have taught and spread Shorinji Kempo. Apart from teaching the fighting system, it also encourages kenshi to develop their moral character. It affects the life of kenshi and all people they come in contact with each day in a miraculous way because what lies at the hart of Shorinji Kempo, is the principle of peace and brotherhood.

There are firm foundations that make Shorinji Kempo the martial art that it is. As said by So Doshin, the founder of Shorinji Kempo, 'Every individual is solely responsible for his/ her happiness or sorrows. They should not blame others for the situation they are facing and should be a part of the solution for every problem." It teaches that justice must be of prime importance, and that individuals need the strength of character to stand against injustice.

Overall, the goals of Shorinji Kempo is to develop the whole personality of an individual. Doshin So has developed an art for which he will be remembered forever, not only because the development of the art but also includes the teachings he has given to the people. Concisely, Shorinji Kempo is a martial art that also develops peoples character and happiness. Right now there will be many people in different parts of the world practicing the principles and fighting styles of Shorinji Kempo. This overall helps to extend peace and brotherhood that will help humanity.
