Geoff Thompson: writer, teacher, martial artist

Geoff Thompson is a name in martial arts you are likely to have heard of, whether it's from magazines, mainstream TV, the shelves of your local book store or word of mouth. He has written over 20 books and 30 DVD's. In this article we take a look at his publishings and how beneficial they are to any aspiring martial artist.

Geoff Thompson

There is no doubt about Geoff Thompson's credentials, he is a 7th Dan in Karate and has further exceptional qualifications in other martial arts styles such as Judo, Aikido and Kung Fu as well as being involved in script writing for stage, screen and TV.

Not only is Geoff the author of one of the best selling martial arts books of all time 'Watch my back', he has his own martial arts training series both on hard copy book and DVD format.

So the questions remain, what can you learn from Geoff Thompson's martial arts training series and just how good is it? Well it is clear to anyone that Geoff is an exceptional martial artist of highly respectable martial arts styles, but then a lot of people are, so what makes his training series stand out is the fact that Geoff through his very own personal life experiences soon found out that the rigid techniques of many traditional styles is not practical when coming up against real life situations.

The beginning of Geoff Thompson's Ground Fighting Series third volume, Chokes and Strangles book gives an account of a real life working experience he had in his younger years of working as a pub doorman and how he had to use his self defense knowledge and skills in a seriously uncomfortable situation, not only to protect himself but many other people around him.

Reading through Mr Thompson's books I was given the impression that I rarely get when reading self defense books, that the author is writing with experience from a huge bank of real life memories, with the examples and practical advice that is given in the books it is clear that he has been witness to everything he is talking about. This leaves you with confidence that with what you are learning from this true martial artist is extremely valuable and actually may save your life should you be unlucky enough to encounter any of the situations described within it.

Although all the books in the series contain not only very descriptive text and very useful photographic images, it is a shame that they could not have been in colour. However this does not affect the quality of the material contained in the series and an accompanying DVD which can be optionally purchased goes further into explaining exactly how each of the techniques should be carried out.

Geoff Thompsons review: 4.5 / 5 starsThe range of DVD's also includes 'Geoff Thompson's Masterclass' which is highly recommended. With six hours of pure martial arts instructions from the 'legend' (as described by Black Belt Magazine USA) almost all aspects of martial arts are covered, from punches, kicks, grappling, fear control, anxiety management, spiritual and metaphysical self-defense. Most of us are no fortunate to train with people like Geoff Thompson however DVD's such as this are the next best thing to training with the man himself.

If you want to learn how to perform flashy moves to impress your mates and colleagues, then Geoff Thompson's training books and DVD's are not for you. If you want to learn practical, valuable advice from a martial artist who talks from experience which will no doubt protect you in an attack then this series is highly recommended.

Self promoting would mean

Self promoting would mean that Geoff himself wrote this article. In fact he had nothing to do with the article at all. He kindly supplied InterMartialArts with a product for us to review honestly.

Ashley i think i may misworded my comment.

I was saying Dont Know if was self promoting, When someone comes on the site or gives one of us a product as advertisement, i just question motivation. I believe if some one knows of a good book or DVD training system, and has reviewed it and expresses an an opinion by all means do so. that is what i love about this forum. I am not out to offend, I just was just wandering if the information by contact from Mr Thompson to get his product advertised, or if a member simply enjoyed the mans work and wanted to express his opinion. Thank you for the reply that he gave the product to us for review and discussion, please dont misinterpret my comment it may not have been worded correctly, i have recommended Alternative energy drinks and Books in these forums myself. I will def check out mr. Thompsons materials.
