Default Hip power in taekwondo pattern

My teacher always tell me to use more hip power in my taekwondo class but he never tells me how to do this or exactly what he means!

How do you use hip power?! what is he talking about.. even Bruce Lee mentioned hip power in some old videos so it must be important. Anyone can give an explanation of this?

I'm not sure about in patterns, do you mean for general techniques?

This is something very difficult to master and it will take some time. The best thing I can recommend is to take each kick / technique at a time and perform it very slowly, like in slow motion. Then think about when you should be moving your hips to generate that extra power. You really can get a lot more power if you rotate your hips into the technique. If you dont do this, your really limiting yourself.

Once you get a feel for when to move your hips in the kicks, try to do it at normal speed, then just keep doing it and doing it, practicing those kicks. Do like 15 kicks on each leg at a time, swapping legs for about 20mins. Without this repitition, you will find it difficult for it to come naturally in the future.

    Good luck!

The hips generate a lot of power, and this has to be made use of while kicking as well as punching. In the front kick, thrusting your hips forward gives the kick power. Imagine that at the instant of throwing the kick, someone slaps you forward hard in the small of your back. That is how our instructor gets us to kick with more 'snap'. In roundhouse, during the kick, your hips should be moving 'into' the kick. To do this, bend the balance knee so that your hips are free to move forward in the direction of the kick. In back kick, try to keep your hips low while kicking and use your hips to thrust back, while you hold the kick for a vibration.

I know it's in Japanese, but it does not make much difference. Try practising this training method...
