I think that is right CD.......and I wonder if how one style applied something whether it affected another style. By way of explaination I was looking into the Hakka people and discovered that there traditional opponents used styles like Hung gar, this got me to wondering whether the styles influenced each other. For instance Hung gar uses devasting strikes and strength is this why SPM puts store in protecting the ribs and internal organs? I wonder just how much influence your opponents style put on the tactics of your own style...bearing in mind that in China you would not be in contact with all styles but just the few in the surrounding areas of where you lived. I wonder how much one developed to counter the other

Allegedly Chang San Feng had studied in the art of Shaolin Kung Fu before he invented his Internal style. I have been taught certain counters against Shaolin attacks such as a double palm strike. This is not really an attack someone is going to use against me in the street (expect the unexpected) but It must have been appropriate when it was put into the system. I have tested this application against different attacks other than the double palm strike so I can apply for street self defence or San Shou competition.Cheng tin hung was a Hung gar practitioner before his changed to Tai chi so maybe he added a little of that knowledge to our system.

Thanks for that. The second video reminds me of Chen Tai Chi as he uses the move "Buddha Pounds Mortar" this adds to my suspicion that Chen Tai Chi has it's roots in Shaolin Kung Fu rather than Taoist Tai chi that came from Wudang mountain. Thanks for that it was an eye opener!

Sorry guys not that impressed to be honest. It's not technically "traditional" Shaolin is it really? Shaolin is just the branding used by by the PRC.
There was some nice shui jiao in one of the clips until the fat bloke took a dive and spoilt it.
"Shaolin" bores me sensless. Give me Hung Gar, Choi Li Fut, Wing Chun and southern mantis anyday.

Understand what you say........especially since shaolin has been devalued somewhat. But I can assure you that their style is very impressive in a spar even against the very best [its been tried and tested]
