    Okay, I had to come back and post this next video. A San Shou demo put on by one of my favorite fighters. Cung Le! This guy is amazing, and minus the throws and take downs, the similarity to kick boxing is striking, but I'm sure some of these guys cross train as well~

    Thanks for showing the videos and also proving a point to me. Over the years I have attended many Kung Fu competitions, competing, referee, Judge, spectator and supporter to friends and students and co-organiser of the Nottingham Open Tai Chi Championships. So my vision of San Shou sparring competition was one of Kung Fu fighters that has nothing in common with kick boxing, unless a kick boxer actually competed in the event. This too can lead to a story of how we pitched a group of Tai Chi fighters against a local kick boxing school, but thats for another day. Any way from the footage you have posted I totally understand your meaning now and does indeed look like kick boxing in certain events. However here is some footage of the San Shou sparring (Chinese Full Contact) and a Wudang Tai Chi brother of mine in action.
    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNLJFEpBoAk]YouTube - Tai Chi San Shou fighter[/ame]

    As you can see it looks nothing like kick boxing unless you count the fact that they do box with their hands and feet . Richard wins by using Tai Chi throws punches and kicks, he knows no other way of fighting and especially not kick boxing. I don't like showing this clip as a v good freind and tai chi brother is seen being beaten by Richard. However he has a position on the podium at the end lol...
    This is how students of mine spar in class with Tai Chi techniques and it is called San Shou (scattering hands), San Shou is the name we use for self defence or for Chinese full contact sparring.

    Nice video, thanks for sharing! Agreed as I can see the differences. I guess it's safe to say that just as kung-fu is a general term for all chinese martial arts.... san shou can be too, sort of a general term for all contact/combat sports using chinese martial arts and not necessarily limited to one style correct??? I always had the idea that san shou was only one particular style of chinese martial arts.

    Nice video of cung and nice too see bill wallace in the intro.........As I understand it sanda was designed to show full contact fighting between different styles and san shou was full contact fighting designed to show applications and the two are pretty much used interchangably now in China.

    It sure is! I also have some footage of his first ever San Shou fight which he won very convincingly. Funny thing is I had my back to him at the competition as I was given the job of judging the hand forms. I had to watch it later from camcorder footage. I usually have one of my two very young children with me now so manage to evade being given judging chores lol.... I hope my master doesn't read that!!!

    Hey, thanks, and thanks for the videos as well. That second video looks so much like some muay thai pad training I've seen. If I had been shown that video and didn't know any better. I would've believed it was Muay thai. LOL ALso, loved the last video. It was great to see that. It was......beautiful
