    Default Karate stance weight distribution

Could someone please confirm to me something, what are the weight distributions in the different stances in karate? You know, weight on front foot and back foot, like 90:10, 50:50...?

I was lucky enough to train with the late Sensei Enoeda a number of times and he told me that it should be roughly 75-25 in both front and back stance.

    I suspect others would differ.

I was taught for zenkutsu 70/30, kokutsu 30/70, neko aski 10/90, all other basic stances 50-50.

What do these numbers mean? Cow dung. Go off the feel. In zenkutsu you should feel heavier on the front foot than on the back, the reverse in kokutsu. In neko ashi dachi you should be able to front kick with the lead leg without moving your body back at all.

In practice it matters, in the real world only the situation will dictate your body position. I do believe strongly that Kokutsu is a guarded position that leaves you the most options, unless it is thai then you always have front stance and into the target. Sochin dachi is a good work out stance and is effectictive in short strike small area application. I was always taught that the horse stance is not static but a knee strike and a fienting technique.

I like the horse riding stance Tim-Bo, for practising the blocks and punches i've learnt so far. I cannot wait to be taught the horse riding, or Kiba Dachi stance, Kata!
