Default Hung Gar vs Choy Li Fut

Hey guys, just done a little studying on Choy Li Fut and it sounds cool, however i'm still stuck on Hung Gar for the next martial arts style I will be studying...

So I just want to know if anyone in this forum has experience of both of the styles?

From the videos i've seen, they both appear very similar...?

    All the best, Roger

Both are Southern styles of Kungfu.

Hung Gar is loosely based around Hong Quan (Tiger Boxing). It focuses on a lot of simultaneous defence and attack.

Choy Li Fut contains techniques from the Shaolin 5 animals. In has quite wide stances for a southern style.

Both, if taught correctly, can be very effective for self defence.

Default Hung Gar Vs. Choy Li Fut

The five Southern Shaolin "family" styles were:
Hung, Lau, Choy, Li, and Mok.

There are many stories as to the origin of each of these styles. Most agree that they are descended from Southern Shaolin. However, the combination style of Choy & Li by Heung Chan in 1836 is usually credited by a Southern Shaolin Monk Li and a Northern Shaolin Monk Choy.

The stances are similar. Techniques, on the surface also seem similar. Hung Gar's bridging concepts are absent in the Choy Li Fu style (Fut is a Buddhist monk).

Choy Li Fut has some very long and beautiful forms. Many of the implement weapons (hoe, rake, bench, fan, cane, etc) are enacted with dramatic flair. I particularly like the hoe form where you pretend to be a farmer hoeing the ground and resting and then spying an enemy and then break into attack mode.

Hung Gar is very practical. Less flower, more power. I like them both. But Hung Gar is my spirit and soul.
