Default Heel pain in martial arts

I am getting quite bad heel pain due to martial arts.

The pain is because of the hard floor we train on and having to wear bare feet. Sometimes the pain is pretty tough on me and I even try to stand on the ball of my foot more instead of my heel. Do you think this should go away after a while? Nobody else seems to have this problem but i dont like to ask people in the class.

The pain is only in the heel, not any other part of my foot.

Heel pain can be from a number of reasons. If your having to adjust how you stand or distribute the weight ( as you obviously are by standing on the ball of your foot) then this is something you need to have looked at before it gets worse. The heel and foot is important to take care of, and if left unchecked can lead to other problems including your back.

I would suggest checking with your doctor. It is possible you have a heel spur or another muscle/joint problem that is now effecting the heel as a result of your increased activity. Only an exam or xray can tell for sure.

Yes, go check it out with a doctor. Some schools in some martial arts will allow you to wear shoes in class. If your doing taekwondo you should be able to, but do NOT wear the shoes when sparring - that's disrespectful to your opponent, and quite frankly will annoy that person a LOT!

Just get it checked out Alan because you really dont want to mess around with your feet, without them your life is a whole lot worse.

Might be a dumb question but is the pain worse first thing in the morning?

Nobody else seems to have this problem but i dont like to ask people in the class

You should be able to ask your instructor anything!!

agree with russell and Midlandspka......see a doc and check if anything wrong, better still a sports physiotherapist and definitly ask your instructor as it just may be that you are not doing something quite right. Your instructor is your friend and was once a student don't forget, every mistake you make he has made in the past.

As prevously mentioned go to you doctor. Sounds like it could be Plantar Fasciitis/Heel spur as I have had this problem for the last 18months or so. (I had to stop training in Lau Gar due to this). also your weight (I am not saying you are overweight btw) may make a difference to this as well. (I know mine does). If the pain is really bad in the morning that definatelty sounds like what I have.
I have to wear orthopedic insoles in my shoe when at work and training and they do really help the condition. The alternative is a "steroid" injection but I don't want to go sown that route just yet.
    Good luck.
