Small skills for big effect

A couple of my students practicing a basic sword avoidance drill - the
purpose being to understand that a small movement is sometimes all that is
necessary in order to achieve the objective.

Small Skills

I see the seven stars stepping neglected in so many Tai Chi demonstrations and it is actually common sense to diagonally side step an attack. We do the same demonstration using a long pole where students side step, duck or jump over as the pole is sent there way in various different swings or stabs. I see so many demos where Tai chi is demonstrated without basic evasion methods. This sword is a good way of making the student focus on the job in hand. You do get used to the little ones wondering around while you demonstrate, I have not had any accidents yet but my two do start fighting with each other, they think it's quite normal lol.

My pet-hate is seeing tai chi

My pet-hate is seeing tai chi demonstrations, where the demonstrator works only in forward and backward, and ends up meeting his opponents force head-on: totally NOT the Tai Chi principle!

If you look at the creative and destructive cycle of the 5 elements that the Tai Chi "5-steps" from the 13 postures are based on, you can see the stratergy that Tai Chi uses to deal with an opponent.
