Yes, this is some of the basic principles in boxing footwork,there are other good footwork methods for turning and as well.
As Nigel said SiGung Bruce Lee also used boxing methods both in some of the footwork and some of the body mechanics as well.Many don't realize he had studied boxing.They only think he did Wing Chun.
