An article of the journey through martial arts by Wayne Hunt, who teaches Wing Chun at the Corto Combat School of Martial Arts in Essex.
My Name is Wayne Hunt i'm The Founder Of The Corto Combat School Of Martial Arts & Instructor Yeoh-Wing Chun.
My journey began in 1978 i was 18 years old and walked through the door of a local Tang Soo Do school run by Master M.K.Loke, i stayed there for 5 years where i earned my 1st Dan Black Belt , i was also Essex Free Fighting Champion 1980,1981,1982.
After i read an article on Wing Chun about Joseph Cheng i got in contact with Sifu Eddie Yeoh and went to his Kwoon in a Chinese School in Soho, He was to become not only my Sifu but a close friend as well i got to meet alot of well known martial arts people through my Sifu like Guro Inosanto ,Bob Breen, Dave Lea,Yap Long ,to name a few we performed at numerous Chinese New Year Celebrations we also would meet at Grandmaster Lee Shing's Resturant 'Yungs' in chinatown for birthdays & christmas these were good times.Due to some personnel problems i had to stop training for quite a while .
I then started Kick-boxing with Phil Mayo for 2 years. Then Muay Thai Under Master Bob for 2 years I then got interested in Filipino Martial Arts and trained with Pat O'Malley in Rapid Arnis for 2 years I then moved onto Flying Eagle Hapkido for 4 years with Stuart Nuttal. I was then bitten by the Wing Chun bug again and a Wing Tsun club opened close to my house so i went along and stayed for 5 years. Then out of the blue a friend of mine asked me to teach him sticks so i did and my friend contacted Pat O'Malley for some Eskrima Sticks and mentioned my name so i then became an affiliate instructor for Raoid Arnis in Essex. I then started to formulate my own system called Corto Combat and got it recognized as a New Western Martial Art by the Cobra Martial Arts Association. I then was approched by the founder of Rough Program and went on an intensive 2 day course where i was certifide to teach Rough Program. I then found a clip on you tube of Sifu Joseph Lee and contacted him and he gave me Sifu Yeoh's Number , so i contacted him to see how he was and asked if i could teach his style of Wing Chun and he gave me his blessing so now my journey has come full circle and another begins.

Respect
Thanks for your story, I really admire those who took up martial arts in the 70's. Martial arts was extremely rare at that time and unusual for someone to make the decision to walk into a dojo / kwoon and start learning something that you had very little knowledge of.
I have a lot of respect for this and envy the fact that you had the opportunity to train with such prestigous masters. Without those of you who took up martial arts in the 70's, it would be even harder to find quality teaching that we have today to pass down to others.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Always good to read about how
Always good to read about how people finally settle on one style after dabbling in so many others. Nice story Wayne.
Thanks for sharing your experience
Thank you for sharing your experience. The path of a martial artist is not easy. There is a lot that one has to put into it, but it is so worth it. I admire people like yourself who follow the path, even when times get tough and you have to stray for a bit, you always find the path again.
i love the journey...
Thanks for your story, it is so inspirational to read how MA fits within others life.
